Connect Stripe to Gafferly
Let your customers pay invoices by card, straight into your own Stripe account. To connect, the account owner signs in to Stripe and approves Gafferly. There is no secret key to copy across.
The money settles to your firm’s own Stripe balance. Gafferly never holds it.
The app costs nothing extra, but it needs a Gafferly subscription (new accounts get a 30-day free trial). Stripe’s standard processing fees apply on your own account.
Only the account owner can connect Stripe. Card payments work during the free trial too.
Also listed on the Stripe App Marketplace.
Six steps from login to connected
Step 1: Log in as the account owner
Only the Owner role in Gafferly can connect or disconnect Stripe. Not using Gafferly yet? Start a free trial first, then carry on from step 2.
Step 2: Open Settings → Payments
The Log in to connect button on this page takes you straight there once you have signed in.
Step 3: Click Connect with Stripe
Gafferly sends you to Stripe to finish the connection. You never copy or paste an API key.
Step 4: Sign in to Stripe and choose the account
Pick the Stripe account you take payments on. That is where your customers' card payments will settle.
Step 5: Review and approve the permissions
Stripe lists exactly what Gafferly is asking for. They are the four permissions in the table further down this page, so you can check them before you start.
Step 6: Check it in Gafferly
You come back to Settings → Payments, which now shows the connected account's name, its Stripe account ID and whether it is in live or test mode. Customers can now pay your invoices by card.
Testing it first?
Settings → Payments also has a Test with a Stripe sandbox button. It connects one of your Stripe sandboxes instead of your live account, so you can send yourself an invoice and pay it with Stripe’s test cards without any real money moving. Settings → Payments always shows which mode is connected. When you’ve finished testing, click Disconnect Stripe, then Connect with Stripe to connect your live account.
Disconnecting and uninstalling
Disconnect in Gafferly
The owner opens Settings → Payments and clicks Disconnect Stripe. We delete the stored connection (account ID, name and tokens) straight away. A line in your account’s activity log recording that Stripe was connected, with the account ID, stays as part of your audit history.
Uninstall in Stripe
Disconnecting in Gafferly leaves the app installed on your Stripe account. To remove it, go to Settings → Installed apps in your Stripe Dashboard and uninstall the Gafferly app for Stripe. If you uninstall there first, Stripe tells Gafferly and the connection is cleared automatically.
Payments that were already recorded (the amount, the date and the Stripe PaymentIntent ID) stay on your invoices after you disconnect, because they are part of your financial records.
The permissions it asks for
Four, and this is what each one is used for. Stripe shows the same list before you approve.
| Permission | What Gafferly uses it for |
|---|---|
Checkout Sessions, writecheckout_session_write | Creates a Stripe Checkout page on your own Stripe account when a customer chooses to pay one of your invoices by card. It sends the amount, the invoice reference and, where you have it on file, your customer's email address so Stripe can email them a receipt. The payment is taken in pounds (GBP) and settles to your Stripe balance. |
Checkout Sessions, readcheckout_session_read | Reads the Checkout Session back to confirm the customer paid, then marks the invoice paid. Every 15 minutes it also checks your recent Checkout Sessions as a backstop in case a notification was missed, and ignores any that Gafferly did not create. |
Events, readevent_read | Receives the checkout.session.completed event from Stripe, so the invoice is marked paid as soon as the customer pays. |
Connected account, readconnected_account_read | Reads your Stripe account's business or display name (or its email address if neither is set), so Settings → Payments can show which account is connected. |
What it does not do
The Gafferly app for Stripe does not:
- Read your Stripe balance or your payouts.
- See your bank details.
- Read or issue refunds. If you refund a customer in Stripe, record it in Gafferly with a credit note.
- Hold your money. Card payments settle to your own Stripe balance and pay out to your bank on Stripe's normal schedule.
- Ask for your Stripe secret key.
- See full card numbers. Your customer types their card details on Stripe's own checkout page.
Privacy, terms and help
- What Gafferly reads from your Stripe account, how long it keeps it and who is responsible for what is set out in our privacy policy, under section 14, the Gafferly app for Stripe.
- Your use of Gafferly, including card payments, is covered by our Terms of Service.
- For the rest of Settings → Payments, including bank transfers and Xero, see the card payments and Xero guide.
